What business insurance covers for a Dallas business

Business insurance in Dallas is bought as separate contracts, and a small firm commonly starts with a business owners policy, the BOP that packages general liability with commercial property.

Three contracts sit around it at a typical Dallas business:

  • Workers compensation, for an employee hurt on the job, which Texas leaves elective
  • Commercial auto, for a vehicle titled to the business or used to carry goods for pay
  • Professional liability, for the advice a firm sells rather than the premises it uses

Umbrella and excess liability go above all of them when a Dallas lease or contract names a limit the policies underneath cannot reach.

General liability answers injury to outsiders and damage to other people’s property, which a Dallas lease demands proof of.

Which county a Dallas business rates in

The City of Dallas covers ground in five counties, Dallas, Collin, Denton, Kaufman and Rockwall, per the City of Dallas, so two Dallas addresses can rate in different territories.

Property is rated by location, and the county and the territory code are the first inputs on a Dallas building.

Commercial property is rated address by address. A restaurant with a second unit north of the Collin County line is two risks on two policies.

The Dallas Central Appraisal District values the building for tax; an insurer rates its replacement cost.

What Dallas hail does to commercial property

Hail is the Dallas commercial property claim that separates the metroplex from the coast, and the roof takes it.

The National Weather Service Fort Worth/Dallas forecast office issues the severe thunderstorm and hail warnings covering Dallas County, and NOAA’s Storm Events Database logs those reports by county.

Three lines a Dallas owner reads off the policy before spring:

  • The wind and hail deductible, often a percentage of the building limit rather than a flat sum
  • Whether the roof settles at replacement cost or actual cash value, which decides what an older roof is worth
  • Whether rooftop HVAC units, signage and awnings are scheduled, because a hail claim takes them too

Workers compensation for a Dallas employer

Workers compensation is elective for most private employers in Texas. Texas Labor Code §406.002 lets an employer elect coverage except where other law requires it.

What a Dallas employer gives up by declining:

  • The exclusive remedy in Texas Labor Code §408.001(a), which reaches only an employee covered by workers’ compensation insurance coverage, so the injured employee sues in court
  • Three common-law defenses, removed by §406.033(a): contributory negligence, assumption of risk and the negligence of a fellow employee

What does not change is the burden of proof: §406.033(d) still makes the employee prove the employer’s negligence. The notices stand either way, under §406.004 and §406.005, and 28 TAC §110.103(b)(1) makes the division notice annual.

Aulona Insurance Group places the coverage for employers who elect it; the election belongs to the business and its counsel.

What Aulona Insurance Group places for Dallas businesses

Seven commercial lines are open to a Dallas business through Aulona Insurance Group, under Texas Agency License #3481412, with insurers it represents.

Lines available:

  • Business owners policy
  • General liability
  • Commercial property
  • Workers compensation
  • Professional liability
  • Umbrella and excess liability
  • Commercial auto

Commercial auto covers a vehicle titled to the business, and the agency writes it beside the package.

Luka Cenaj, the agency’s licensed principal, goes through the operation on a recorded call before anything is quoted.

The size band and the Dallas classes that fit it

Aulona Insurance Group’s small-business program has hard eligibility limits, and a Dallas account clearing them places easily.

Inside the band:

  • Annual gross revenue under $5 million, and total W-2 payroll under $5 million
  • Workers compensation runs through its own market and is not limited by the revenue and payroll figures above
  • Loss history under $20,000, with no more than two incidents in the past three years
  • No prior carrier cancellation and no bankruptcy filing

Restaurants, professional services, fitness studios, retail, personal care and technology services are the classes that place most readily. Electricians, plumbers, HVAC contractors and body shops take more underwriting questions, and roofing and siding take none.

New businesses are accepted. A firm with an office in the city and a second unit in Rockwall or Kaufman County needs a BOP for each, capped at $5 million of total insured value per location.

Where Aulona Insurance Group is not the right fit

Aulona Insurance Group cannot place every Dallas business, and an owner hears that first.

Dallas trades and operations with no market here:

  • Roofing and siding, which is the exclusion a hail-season metroplex runs into most
  • Towing operators, gas stations and auto dealerships
  • Hospitals, physician practices and cannabis businesses
  • Used-goods dealers, non-durable goods wholesalers, livestock and pet breeders

The size tests above cover the rest: revenue, payroll, loss history, a prior cancellation and a bankruptcy filing. Life, health, Medicare and disability are not written at all.

What moves the price of a Dallas business policy

The premium on a Dallas commercial policy is set by the insurer, not by Aulona Insurance Group, and no figure appears on this site.

What an underwriter prices a Dallas account on:

  • The class code, which is why a bakery and a welding shop price nothing alike
  • Claim history, and whether a past loss was weather or liability
  • Annual revenue on the liability lines, and W-2 payroll on workers compensation
  • The building, where roof age and roof covering carry more weight in North Texas
  • Limits, deductibles, and any additional insured or waiver endorsement a contract forces

North Texas hail reaches a Dallas commercial rate through the property and the deductible, not the owner.
