What business insurance covers for a San Antonio business
Business insurance in San Antonio answers three questions no single policy answers together: what the business owns, who it employs, and who it can injure.
The contracts that do that work:
- A business owners policy, the BOP, which packages general liability with commercial property
- Workers compensation, for the employee hurt on the job, which Texas leaves elective
- Commercial auto, for any vehicle the business titles or sends out for pay
- Professional liability and umbrella coverage, added when a San Antonio lease or client contract names a limit
A BOP on its own leaves the employee, the vehicle and the professional exposure uncovered. A small San Antonio account commonly holds two or three of these contracts.
Which county a San Antonio business rates in
San Antonio is the county seat of Bexar County, and the city limits also reach into Comal and Medina counties, per the City of San Antonio.
Property is rated by location, and the county and the territory code are the first inputs on a Bexar County building.
Commercial property is rated address by address. A salon on the South Side and a second unit in Stone Oak are two risks, each carrying its own BOP.
The Bexar Appraisal District values the building for tax; an insurer rates its replacement cost.
What San Antonio hail and flash flooding do to commercial property
Hail is a common San Antonio commercial roof claim, and flash flooding arrives with little warning.
The National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio forecast office issues the severe thunderstorm, hail and flash flood warnings covering Bexar County, and NOAA’s Storm Events Database logs those reports by county.
Three lines a San Antonio owner reads off the policy:
- The wind and hail deductible, often a percentage of the building limit rather than a flat sum
- Whether the roof settles at replacement cost or actual cash value, which decides what an older roof is worth
- Flood, excluded by every commercial property policy and answered only by the National Flood Insurance Program after a 30-day wait
Workers compensation for a San Antonio employer
Workers compensation is elective for most private employers in Texas under Texas Labor Code §406.002.
A San Antonio employer that declines carries three paper duties and one legal shift:
- File the written notice with the Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers’ Compensation under Texas Labor Code §406.004.
- Repeat that filing every year between February 1 and April 30, which 28 TAC §110.103(b)(1) requires.
- Tell each new employee and post the notice at the Bexar County premises, under §406.005.
The legal shift is Texas Labor Code §406.033: subsection (a) removes the contributory negligence, assumed risk and fellow-employee defenses, and subsection (d) still makes the injured employee prove negligence.
Aulona Insurance Group places the coverage for employers who elect it. The election belongs to the business and its counsel.
What Aulona Insurance Group places for San Antonio businesses
Aulona Insurance Group writes seven commercial lines for San Antonio accounts under Texas Agency License #3481412, with insurers it represents.
Lines available:

Commercial auto sits on the same submission as the package.

The size band and the San Antonio classes that fit it
Aulona Insurance Group’s small-business program has hard eligibility limits, and a San Antonio account inside them places easily.
Inside the band:
- Annual gross revenue under $5 million, and total W-2 payroll under $5 million
- Workers compensation runs through its own market and is not limited by the revenue and payroll figures above
- Loss history under $20,000, with no more than two incidents in the past three years
- No prior carrier cancellation and no bankruptcy filing
Food and beverage, personal care, fitness, retail and professional services are the classes that place most readily in San Antonio. Construction trades and auto service take more underwriting questions, and roofing and siding take none.
New businesses are accepted. A business with one unit in Bexar County and another over the Comal or Medina line needs a BOP for each, capped at $5 million of total insured value per location.
Where Aulona Insurance Group is not the right fit
Aulona Insurance Group cannot place every San Antonio business, and the exclusions come first.
San Antonio operations with no market here:
- Roofing and siding, a no-market problem rather than a pricing one
- Night clubs, gas stations, towing operators and auto dealerships
- Hospitals, physician practices and cannabis businesses
- Livestock operations and pet breeders, which reaches a business working land outside the city
- Used-goods dealers and non-durable goods wholesalers
The size tests above cover revenue, payroll, loss history, a prior cancellation and a bankruptcy filing. Life, health, Medicare and disability are not written at all.
What moves the price of a San Antonio business policy
The premium on a San Antonio commercial policy is set by the insurer, not by Aulona Insurance Group, and no figure appears on this site.
What a San Antonio submission is priced on:
- The class code, which is why a bakery and a machine shop price nothing alike
- The building: age, construction, sprinklers, roof, and whether the lot drains into a flood zone
- Annual revenue on the liability lines, and W-2 payroll on workers compensation
- Claim history, counted by size and by number on the loss run
- Limits, deductibles, and any additional insured or waiver endorsement a contract forces
Bexar County hail reaches a San Antonio rate through the property and the deductible, not the owner.
