What Is Gap Insurance?

Gap insurance covers the difference between what you owe on a vehicle and what it is worth if it is totaled. When it matters and when it does not.

Gap insurance pays the loan shortfall

Gap insurance pays the difference between what you still owe on a vehicle loan or lease and what the insurer says the vehicle was worth on the day it was totaled or stolen. Without gap coverage, that difference is your bill, and you keep paying on a car you no longer have.

A total loss settles at actual cash value, which is what your vehicle was worth the minute before the crash. Actual cash value is not what you paid for it and not what your lender says you owe.

New-vehicle loans routinely sit above that value for the first two or three years, which is the whole reason the product exists. Gap coverage closes the shortfall, pays nothing extra on top, and stops being useful the moment your loan balance drops below the vehicle’s value.

How gap sits on top of the primary coverage

Gap coverage rides on top of comprehensive and collision, and cannot exist without both on the policy.

A total loss runs the primary coverage first. The insurer values the vehicle, subtracts your deductible, and pays the lienholder. Gap then looks at what the loan still shows and covers the remainder.

Four decisions made at the dealership set the size of that remainder:

  • How much you put down, and whether negative equity from a trade-in got rolled into the new loan
  • The length of the loan term, since a long term holds the balance high while the vehicle depreciates
  • How quickly that particular model loses value
  • How many miles you drive in a year

Gap gets sold three ways: by the lender at signing, by the dealer as a standalone contract, and by an insurer as an endorsement on the auto policy.

How a gap claim runs after the total loss

A gap claim opens only after the primary settlement is final, because the gap payment is measured against a number the auto insurer has already produced. The lienholder applies the actual cash value payment to the loan balance and issues the payoff statement the gap claim works from.

Four documents move that claim:

  • The auto insurer’s total loss valuation and settlement breakdown, showing the deductible that came out
  • The lender’s payoff statement, dated after the settlement was applied
  • The original retail installment contract, or the lease agreement on a leased vehicle
  • The gap contract or endorsement itself, which states whether your deductible sits inside the payment or outside it

The Texas version

A Texas lease typically requires gap coverage, and the requirement sits in the lease agreement rather than in anything the insurance agent hands you. A leased vehicle’s residual value is set by the leasing company, so a total loss can leave a Texas driver owing money even with comprehensive and collision in force.

Texas hail is the reason this comes up more here than elsewhere. A hailstorm can total a newer vehicle on cosmetic damage alone, in year one of a loan written over six or seven years.

Aulona Insurance Group places neither gap-only nor storage-only policies. Gap as an endorsement on a Texas auto policy is a different question, and the answer depends on the insurer, the vehicle’s age, and whether comprehensive and collision are already on the policy.

Aulona Insurance Group places the coverage this question is about: Full Coverage Auto Insurance in Texas.

What gap pays and what the primary policy pays

Gap coverage and the underlying auto policy answer different parts of the same total loss. The table shows which part each one handles.

Situation Comprehensive or collision pays Gap pays
Vehicle totaled in a crash Actual cash value, less the collision deductible The remaining loan or lease balance
Vehicle stolen and never recovered Actual cash value, less the comprehensive deductible The remaining balance
Vehicle hailed out and totaled Actual cash value, less the comprehensive deductible The remaining balance
Vehicle damaged but repairable Repair cost, less the deductible Nothing
Loan balance already below the vehicle’s value The full settlement Nothing
Missed payments and late fees added to the loan Nothing Excluded on the standard contract
Your deductible Nothing Whatever the gap contract says
A replacement vehicle Nothing Nothing

Gap never buys you another car. Gap closes a debt, which is a different job from replacing a vehicle.

What to have ready before you ask an agent

Pull your loan payoff quote first. A payoff quote is dated and exact, and the question of whether gap is worth carrying turns on that number.

Have these in front of you:

  • A dated payoff quote from the lender, or the residual value from the lease agreement
  • The vehicle’s year, make, model, trim, mileage, and seventeen-digit VIN
  • Your original purchase or lease contract, including any gap product the dealer already sold you
  • Your current declarations page, showing whether comprehensive and collision are on the policy

Check the dealer contract before you buy anything else. Gap bought at signing and gap added to the auto policy sit in two different stacks of paperwork, and a driver can end up paying for both.
