What auto insurance covers for a Houston driver

Texas Transportation Code §601.072 puts the same 30/60/25 liability floor under a Houston policy as under one written in Amarillo, and the Texas Auto Insurance page sets out what each of those three numbers pays and what the two optional coverages add.

Liability answers nothing for a stolen pickup or an engine pulled full of water, which is where a Houston policy comes apart, so comprehensive coverage is the half of the contract a Houston driver has to decide on.

FEMA has carried the City of Houston in the National Flood Insurance Program’s regular phase since December 11, 1979 as community number 480296, with the current Houston flood insurance rate map effective January 29, 2021. That map drives what a lender demands on the house and says nothing about the vehicle parked beside it.

Which county a Houston auto policy rates in

Houston sits mostly in Harris County, and the city limits also reach into Fort Bend County and Montgomery County, per the City of Houston.

Texas Insurance Code §2253.001 stops an insurer that subdivides a county into rating territories from charging any subdivision more than 15 percent above another for identical coverage, and 28 TAC §5.9960 lets it exceed that only on a rate that is actuarially sound and supported by data filed with the Texas Department of Insurance.

Two households with Houston mailing addresses can therefore sit in two different rating territories:

  • A house inside Beltway 8 sits in Harris County, which is the county the vehicle rates in
  • A house on the far northern edge of the city limits can fall to Montgomery County instead
  • A house on the southwestern edge can fall to Fort Bend County

Give the agent the garaging address, the place the vehicle sleeps at night, not the mailing address.

What theft and flood water do to a Houston auto policy

Vehicle theft and flood water are the two Houston claims that set the city apart from the rest of Texas, and both land on the same coverage.

The Texas Department of Public Safety publishes a monthly auto theft report built from Texas Crime Information Center entries, and the Houston Police Department is one of the agencies reporting into it.

The National Weather Service Houston/Galveston forecast office issues the flash flood warnings, tropical storm warnings and hurricane warnings that cover Harris County.

Comprehensive coverage pays for a stolen vehicle and for a drowned one. Collision does not. Liability never does.

A Houston driver carrying 30/60/25 and nothing else owns the flooded engine outright. The National Flood Insurance Program writes buildings and contents, not vehicles.

What Aulona Insurance Group places for Houston drivers

Aulona Insurance Group places personal auto for Houston drivers under Texas Agency License #3481412, standard risk and non-standard risk alike, and the Texas Auto Insurance page lists every vehicle type and use the agency writes.

Harris County sends two files more often than most counties do: the driver rebuilding a record behind an SR-22, and the financed vehicle whose lienholder will not sign off without physical damage coverage on it.

Luka Cenaj, the agency’s licensed principal, goes through the coverage on a recorded call before anything binds, and a Houston file reaches only the insurers Aulona Insurance Group is appointed with.

Where Aulona Insurance Group is not the right fit

Aulona Insurance Group holds no market for a vehicle at $150,000 or more in manufacturer’s suggested retail price, a vehicle built before 1981, a vehicle without a seventeen-digit VIN, an RV, ATV, trailer, golf cart, bus, hearse or heavy truck, a storage-only or gap-only policy, or a vehicle garaged at a post office box address.

Non-owner policies are declined as well, with one exception: a non-owner SR-22 for a listed driver.

Houston meets that list at the commercial line most often. A vehicle used for business, or titled to an LLC, corporation, partnership or trust, is not written on a personal auto policy. Aulona Insurance Group places it as commercial auto instead. See Commercial Auto Insurance in Texas.

What moves the price of a Houston auto policy

Premium on a Houston auto policy is set by the insurer, never by Aulona Insurance Group, and no figure for it appears anywhere on this site.

A Houston rate is built from the record, the limits and deductibles chosen, and the territory the vehicle is garaged in:

  • The driving record, which is rated separately from the address; a ticket, an at-fault accident or a coverage gap stays on the rating for years
  • Liability limits above the 30/60/25 floor
  • The comprehensive and collision deductible, where a higher deductible buys a smaller premium and a larger bill after a storm
  • The age and value of the vehicle, and what a Houston body shop charges to repair it
  • The county and territory the vehicle is garaged in

Harris County theft and Gulf Coast water reach a Houston rate through the territory, not through the driver.

Working with Aulona Insurance Group from Houston

Aulona Insurance Group works from one office, in Plano, and serves Houston by phone. No visit to Houston or to Plano is part of placing coverage.

Eight questions on this site close with a one-time code texted to the mobile number on the form, and the whole form takes about two minutes.

Luka Cenaj calls back from there, goes through the vehicles, the drivers at the address and the coverage, then carries the file to the appointed markets. Nothing is quoted or bound before that call, and the conversation runs in Albanian on request.
