What auto insurance covers for a San Antonio driver

Texas Transportation Code §601.072 fixes a San Antonio driver’s liability floor at 30/60/25, and the Texas Auto Insurance page explains each limit, personal injury protection (PIP) under Texas Insurance Code §1952.152, and the uninsured motorist offer under Texas Insurance Code §1952.101.

San Antonio changes none of that, and changes the deductible conversation instead, because comprehensive coverage is the only part of the policy that answers hail on a parked vehicle.

FEMA lists the City of San Antonio as National Flood Insurance Program community 480045, in that program’s regular phase since December 15, 1983, with the flood insurance rate map now in force dated July 19, 2023. Neither the program nor the map reaches a vehicle.

How Bexar County rates a San Antonio auto policy

San Antonio is the county seat of Bexar County, and the city limits also reach into Comal County and Medina County, per the City of San Antonio.

Texas Insurance Code §2253.001 stops an insurer that subdivides a county into rating territories from charging any subdivision more than 15 percent above another for identical coverage, and 28 TAC §5.9960 lets it exceed that only on a rate that is actuarially sound and supported by data filed with the Texas Department of Insurance.

Two consequences for a San Antonio household:

  • A move from the South Side to Stone Oak stays inside Bexar County, while a move north across the Comal County line may not stay in the same territory
  • A vehicle garaged in San Antonio is rated on that address, not on the office it commutes to

The Bexar Central Appraisal District appraises the property; the insurer rates the garaging address.

Who pays when a San Antonio driver is hit by an uninsured motorist

Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is the part of a San Antonio auto policy that answers the driver who has nothing behind them.

Texas Insurance Code §1952.101 requires every insurer to offer uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage on a personal auto policy, and a driver can turn it down only by signing a written rejection.

The mechanism, in order:

  • Liability pays the other driver, never the policyholder
  • Uninsured motorist coverage steps in when the at-fault driver carries no policy at all
  • Underinsured motorist coverage covers the gap when the at-fault driver’s 30/60/25 runs out before the injuries do

A hit-and-run with no plate number is an uninsured motorist claim, not a collision claim, when the coverage is on the policy.

What hail does to a San Antonio auto policy

Hail is the San Antonio weather claim that liability coverage pays none of.

The National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio forecast office issues severe thunderstorm and hail warnings for Bexar County, and the same office publishes the storm reports afterward.

Dents across the hood and roof, and a cracked windshield, are paid by comprehensive coverage. Collision pays none of it.

Crash volume is the other San Antonio number a driver can look up. The Texas Department of Transportation lists the City of San Antonio on its own line in the annual Crashes and Injuries by Cities and Towns tables drawn from the Crash Records Information System.

Hail lands on comprehensive. Crashes land on collision and liability.

What Aulona Insurance Group places for San Antonio drivers

Aulona Insurance Group is a licensed Texas agency placing personal auto across the state, standard and non-standard, under Texas Agency License #3481412, with the whole placement list on the Texas Auto Insurance page.

Bexar County work splits between households buying comprehensive coverage for the first time after a hail season and drivers who need an SR-22 filed.

Each San Antonio risk is taken only to insurers the agency represents, and Luka Cenaj, the agency’s licensed principal, goes over the limits and the two deductibles on a recorded call first.

Where Aulona Insurance Group is not the right fit

Aulona Insurance Group declines a vehicle at $150,000 or more in manufacturer’s suggested retail price, a vehicle built before 1981, a vehicle without a seventeen-digit VIN, recreational vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, trailers, golf carts, buses, hearses and heavy trucks, storage-only and gap-only policies, and a vehicle whose garaging address is a post office box.

Non-owner policies go the same way, except a non-owner SR-22 for a listed driver.

A vehicle used for business, or titled to an LLC, corporation, partnership or trust, is not written on a personal auto policy. Aulona Insurance Group places it as commercial auto instead. See Commercial Auto Insurance in Texas.

What moves the price of a San Antonio auto policy

Premium on a San Antonio auto policy is set by the insurer, never by Aulona Insurance Group, and no figure for it appears anywhere on this site.

A San Antonio rate is built from the record, the limits and deductibles chosen, the vehicle and the Bexar County address it is garaged at:

  • The driving record, carrying any ticket, at-fault accident or coverage gap for years afterwards
  • Liability limits selected above the 30/60/25 minimum
  • The comprehensive and collision deductible, the number the hail conversation comes down to
  • The age and value of the vehicle, and what a San Antonio body shop charges to repair it
  • The Bexar County garaging address and the miles driven from it

Hail reaches a San Antonio rate through the territory, not through the driver.
